چکیده

Pot experiments showed that Rhizobium japonicum cells entrapped in a polyacrylamide gel could be used as an inoculant for soybeans and compared favorably to laboratory-made peat base inoculant containing the same bacterial strain.

Selection of Strains of Root Nodule Bacteria to Improve Inoculant Performance and Increase Legume Productivity in Stressful Environments

Pulse, pasture and grain legumes are important for maintaining productivity in many agricultural systems. The formation of effective nitrogen-fixing symbioses between legumes and root nodule bacteria is essential for many legumes in agriculture. In many situations, soil inoculation with effective strains of root nodule bacteria is required for maximising legume yields. A key strategy to enhance...

Rhizobium giardinii is the microsymbiont of Illinois bundleflower (Desmanthus illinoensis (Michx.) Macmillan) in midwestern prairies.

Illinois bundleflower (Desmanthus illinoensis (Michx.) Macmillan) has potential as a grain and forage legume for the American Midwest. Inoculant-quality rhizobia for this legume have been identified but not previously characterized. Rhizobia trapped from 20 soils in the natural range of the Illinois bundleflower had characteristics that placed them overwhelmingly within the species Rhizobium gi...

Selection/ Isolation of High Temperature Tolerant Strains of Rhizobium for Management of High Temperature Stress on Rhizobium- Legume Symbiosis

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is carried out by free-living, non-symbiotic, associative and symbiotic nitrogen fixing bacteria, symbiotic fixers being the major contributors. LegumeRhizobium association being most effectively and widely studied is the major area of concern with regard to BNF technology. The symbiotic association between legumes and rhizobia is highly influenced by various ...

Benefits of Inoculating Legume Crops with Rhizobia in the Northern Great Plains

Inoculation of forage and grain legumes with rhizobia is an important process to maximize biological N2 fixation capacity in these crops. Inoculation has the potential of increasing dry matter yield, N yield, and residual N levels. However, yield responses to inoculation are not universal in the region. In fields that have previously grown the same grain legume crop (i.e. contain an endemic rhi...

Dilution of liquid Rhizobium cultures to increase production capacity of inoculant plants.

Experiments were undertaken to test whether peat-based legume seed inoculants, which are prepared with liquid cultures that have been deliberately diluted, can attain and sustain acceptable numbers of viable rhizobia. Liquid cultures of Rhizobium japonicum and Rhizobium phaseoli were diluted to give 10, 10, or 10 cells per ml, using either deionized water, quarter-strength yeast-mannitol broth,...
